ROUTE GUIDE

Bulgaria route guide

General information on customs, documents and border crossing. For situations specific to your cargo and product, consult your customs broker.

Customs and document preparation

Bulgaria is an EU member. Customs formalities, taxes and the documents needed depend on the status of the goods. Confirm with your customs broker whether an A.TR or suitable proof of origin is appropriate before loading.

Since 1 January 2025 Bulgaria has also been part of the Schengen area by land, and internal border checks at its borders with Greece and Romania have been lifted. Customs controls continue, so correct documents are just as important.

Border crossings

The Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo and Hamzabeyli–Lesovo crossings are considered alongside loading and delivery plans. Border congestion and document preparation are taken into account when scheduling departure.

Transit shipments

Cargo that is not delivered in Bulgaria but only passes through (for example towards Serbia or Romania) is carried under a transit document. This cargo is not cleared in Bulgaria; it is processed at the destination customs office.

Delivery planning

Border congestion, document readiness and the delivery address affect the transport plan. Weekends and public holidays are considered when scheduling departure.

Checklist before loading
  • The commercial invoice and packing list are ready; the required movement certificate or proof of origin has been confirmed.
  • The consignee's EORI number and tax details have been obtained.
  • The delivery term (Incoterms) is written down.
  • The delivery address and contact person are complete.
Common document issues
  • Quantities and weights on the commercial invoice and the packing list do not match.
  • The description of the goods is too general, so the customs tariff code cannot be determined.
  • The consignee's EORI number or VAT details were not obtained before loading.
  • The consignee's telephone number and contact person are missing, which delays the delivery appointment.
