Route planning

ROUTE GUIDE

Greece route guide

General information on customs, documents and border crossing. For situations specific to your cargo and product, consult your customs broker.

Customs and document preparation

For shipments to Greece, import formalities and documents are planned according to the status of the goods. An A.TR may be used for eligible goods under the customs union; it does not prove origin. Check with your customs broker whether a certificate of origin or additional documents are needed before loading.

Once entry formalities are complete, cargo moves freely within the EU; deliveries inside Greece involve no further border procedure.

Consignee details and delivery terms

A company importing into the EU needs an EORI number (the EU customs registration number). Who pays import VAT and who bears customs costs depends on the delivery term (Incoterms) chosen in the order; clarifying this when ordering avoids surprise costs at delivery.

Planning the İpsala crossing

Congestion at border gates varies with the day of the week, the season and public holidays. Leaving a margin for waiting when you choose the departure day, and preparing documents completely before loading, shortens the time spent at the border.

Delivery planning

Delivery is planned around the loading day, border congestion, document readiness and delivery address. Public holidays are also taken into account.

Checklist before loading
  • The commercial invoice and packing list are ready; movement and origin documents needed for the shipment have been confirmed.
  • The full address, telephone number and delivery hours of the consignee in Greece are known.
  • The delivery term (Incoterms) and who bears import costs are written down.
  • The weight and dimensions of the cargo are declared with real values.
Common document issues
  • Quantities and weights on the commercial invoice and the packing list do not match.
  • The description of the goods is too general, so the customs tariff code cannot be determined.
  • A movement certificate or proof of origin needed for the shipment is missing or incorrect; customs formalities may be delayed.
  • The consignee's telephone number and contact person are missing, which delays the delivery appointment.
